The Human Immune System

The immune system’s primary role is to protect you from bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins harmful to your mind and body.

The immune system is a complex network of organs, proteins, specific cells, and tissue.

You need to ensure your immune system is robust and healthy to function efficiently, effectively and at peak performance.

What  Makes Up the Immune System?

The three main parts of the immune system are: 

  • The Innate Immune System: Innate immunity is the defence mechanism that kicks in immediately, or after a few hours, you were born with this system already in place, and it is the most dominant of the three.
  • The Adaptive Immune System: This develops gradually over time after your body builds up its immunity after being exposed to bacteria and viruses.
  • The Passive Immune System: This system is activated when you are given antibodies via a vaccine to fight infection instead of using antibodies produced by your immune system.

Sub-Systems:

  • The Lymphatic System: A network of channels throughout the body carries lymphocytes to the lymphoid organs and bloodstream.
  • The Complement System: Made up of numerous distinct plasma proteins.

The 12 Systems of The Immune System

  • The Skin: This is the largest organ of our body, a physical all over barrier against the external environment.
  • White blood cells: These are made in your bone marrow and are part of the lymphatic system.
  • Antibodies: A protein produced by the Adaptive Immune System and the Innate Immune System.
  • The Complement System: Made up of numerous distinct plasma proteins.
  • Adenoids: Two glands located at the back of the nasal passage, which is, in fact, the Pharyngeal Tonsils.The Lymphatic System
  • Bone Marrow: Soft, spongy tissue found in bone cavities.
  • Lymph Nodes: Small organs shaped like beans are located throughout the body and connect via the lymphatic vessels.
  • Peyer’s Patches: Lymphoid tissue in the small intestine.
  • Spleen: A fist-sized organ located in the abdominal cavity.
  • Thymus: Two lobes that join in front of the trachea behind the breastbone.
  • Thyroid gland: A small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck’s base below Adam’s apple.
  • Liver: The liver contains many immunologically active cells, acting as a “sieve” for antigens carried to it via the portal system as well as many other functions.

The Tonsils:

There are three sets of tonsils in the body that are also part of the lymphatic system.

Pharyngeal Tonsil: Is a mass ofdid-you-know-you-had-3-sets-of-tonsils

lymphatic tissue attached to the nasal pharynx’s back wall is located in the upper part of the throat, opening into the nasal cavity.

  • Palatine Tonsils: Two lumps of tissue situated on both the left and right at the back of the throat.
  • Lingual Tonsils: Lymphatic tissue, which is on the surface tissue of the base of the tongue.

All have an equally important and fascinating role to play in the war zone, that is, your body.

Having A Healthy Immune System Pays

By having a healthy immune system, you will have a much better chance of fighting and recovering from the more severe viruses out there, such as the Influenza Virus.

The COVID -19 coronavirus is not the only deadly virus out there right now, and it most certainly won’t be the last unknown virus we will have to face.

    I’m very much impressed by this article, it somehow reminds me of some forgotten biology staff at my high school level. Our body’s immune system is very important of course because it protects our bodies against harmful bacteria and viruses as you’ve mentioned. Little did I know that there are major systems and sub-systems that make our immune system. I truly enjoyed your article and thanks for being so informative and educative.

      So pleased you enjoyed my article and was able to take away something you didn’t know before, I think my age maybe showing with regard to high school biology staff member, it was actually one of my favorite subjects, still is. 😊

      Yes our Immune Systems are awesome and its not until I really checked it out that I realized just how amazing it really was.

      I’m really quite shocked at some of the things I am discovering and will be regularly posting some really beneficial information that I feel should be common knowledge.

      I truly believe there would be a lot less sick people in the world if we knew half of what I have discovered so far.
